As simple as it can be

Dah hari-hari makan nasi, bohsan gak, so today we decided to change the menu. We decided to have speghetti chicken meatballs.
I'm in charge of making the meatballs and garlic bread and the rest ... depa la yang buat ...
so clockwise - the speghetti, the improvised garlic breads (as long as it has garlic and bread and butter), the gravy and the meatballs (buat enam besar2, sorang 2 ketul) then as dessert - the famous cikodok pisang.

I Walk

I walked with confidence. My stride were long and fast. The day was chilly but I didn't feel it. My heart was thumping in synchronised with my stride. Thump, thump, thump.

What's in the mug?

Did you find what you're looking for, dear?

New Look New Style

I always have an issue with bathroom or toilet. I may not be too fussy about clothes I wear, food I eat or almost everything else I do in life, but I am quite (to say that I'm very is not truthful) fussy about my bathroom.
So when I moved into this flat, I love everything about it except of course the bathroom. Like any other bathroom in any other houses in the world, it has all the basic functional equipment. No complaint about that. Unfortunately for us who live in this blocks of council homes, the bathroom was designed not to have a proper ventilation.
Definitely when it summer, the temperature may soar like we're back in Malaysia and when it's winter, the themometer mercury would plunge to a minuscule height and the bathroom would be the last place where you want to be found when you're dropped and dead. It would be like a freezer, but then your body would last a bit longer though before the maggots came .....
Anyway! Not just the carpet was dirty aaaannnnd wet, the colour chosen for that tiny closet called bathroom is GREEN! Yikes! I mean, were our predecessor colour blind? Moss green carpet in a bathroom? They're seriously need to be educated on colour scheme. That's enough to make me green (not with envy though but just green er.. like HULK?) and is soaked due to all the splashing/bathing activities in the bathtub.
And when it's dirty, no one had the 'heart' to take off the old carpet, dry it or even replaced it. Who knows what type of creepy crawlies lurking under that hedious green wet carpet? But I CAN'T STAND the carpet! I hate it! I want it removed and I want it removed now!
So I decided, drastic situation needs a drastic measure. Of we go to the £1 shops that are scattered everywhere in the city centre and bought a self-adhesive laminated flooring and started on our project to spruce up the toilet. It took only a day to take out the old soaked carpet and sticking the laminated floor. Not bad for an amateur like me to do the labour work.
First we took out the carpet, hoover it and clean it manually, sticking the laminated floor like playing jigsaw puzzle and viola! The new vinyle floor is completed. Took out the old dirty shower curtain and replaced it with a blue more softer plastic curtain (also cost £1). Another week went by as we want to wait for the carboot sale day for the last touch-up - the rug. All in all, we're happy with the result. Not bad for amateurs.
Just look at the difference!

Cost breakdown.
1. Laminated Floor (come in four per pack) = £8.00
2. Shower curtain (blue and soft) = £1.00
3. Bath rugs (bought at carboot n purple in colour) = £2.99
4. Labour (TLC) = £0.00

Kalaulah ...

Kalaulah mak tahu, agak-agak dia bangga tak?
Kalaulah mak tahu, agak-agak dia suka tak?
Susah nak cakap pasal mak ni. Mak tipikal orang Jawa dulu-dulu.
Aku pun dah 'dididik' untuk tune on and off bila-bila masa aku fikir perlu.
Satu lagi perangai mak ni, dia tak suka orang buat pekerjaan yang dia boleh buat. Contohnya menjahit. Mak memang pandai menjahit.
Kesian kat mak. Kesian gak kat baju aku tu. Kalau mak dah letih, lengan baju aku boleh jadi panjang seinci. Dah tu kesian kat aku plak, sebab bahu rebeh sebelah. Ish!
Oh lupa! Samosa juga.
Bila mak masak, dia tak suka orang ganggu hatta bantu dia potong bawang sekalipun.
Tapi, bak kata orang 'desperate time needs desperate measure'. Sejak aku duduk kat sini, di tempat orang cuma guna coconut powder bukan kelapa parut, ikan salmon atau trout sebagai pengganti ikan kembung .... ish! terer gak aku masak. Menjadi gak aku punya kari dengan masak kicap.
Mak, sedaplah ... tak cemplang langsung. Sampai housemate aku nak hirup kuah sampai habis hihihihi ....
Untuk orang macam aku yang dapurnya berselerak kat tepi jalan dan utensilnya adalah kertas biru, hijau dan merah dengan gambar agung, ini dah kira a great achievement! Agaknya kalau aku bukak kedai masakan melayu kat sini, laku kot, hihihi berangan!

Out Out and Away!

FRIDAY - 15/09/06
After two days of rain, the sun decided to step away from its hiding place and blessed us with its shine and warmth. It's our day out and would be my first time to Loch Lomond.

We've been planning for this trip for almost a week as Wan received a brochure about Loch Lomond Food and Drink Festival. Apparently it's an annual event and held at Balloch.

Since Wan is working on weekends, we decided to go on Friday after the Jumah prayer. We crammed into Wan's Honda Odyssey - 4 adults, 3 children and 1 baby in car seat - Go figure.

The trip took about 40 minutes from Govanhill. The scenery changed once we left the city. It may not be too far from the city but the scenery changed dramatically. The rolling hills, the open fields with sheeps roaming around and the cute cottages. Memang Jakun wa cakap lu!

Although the scenery was beautiful, the festival itself was a let down. It was supposed to be a food festival but the tents can be counted with fingers (Boleh kira dengan jari gitu!!!). It's not semeriah food festival in KL or not even on the same standard with pasar malam in Sentul. Of course lah, this is Scotland and nothing's compare to KL. Even food festival in Singapore is peanuts compared to pasar malam in KL.

I think there were less than 20 tents lined along the pedestrian walkway. There were tents selling cheese, ale and whisky. Variation of meats and of course the oink oink was included. Then there was the tent which attracted us to this place on the first place (aik?). Its the chocolate tent. The only tent that charge for entry. And it aint cheap I tell you. £5 per entry per adult. Cheh! Since we were charged to enter, our first assumption was that we can eat any chocolate we can inside the tent.

'Oh! No,' says the lady with a smile on her face. 'All these chocolates are for sale. We have some bits for you to taste'.

Laaa ..... kena beli ke? Didn't I just parted with my precious £5 at the entrance? Yet, we have to pay for chocolates stacked precariously on the triple tier plates, sitting onthe tables adorned with sweet red strawberries, soft marshmallow (tak boleh makan laaa ada gelatine) around the chocolate fondue? Alaaaa boleh tengok jer ke? Chis!! Anyway there was a Pakistani stall selling pakora and other Indian delicacies. At least adalah gak satu stall yang sell makanan halal. Tapi tak beli pun .... rasa jer!

Takkanlah we're leaving without buying any chocolates for ourselves, not to mention three kids who have super sweet tooth (teeth?) and love and adore chocolates in every shape, sizes, filling and prices? So, we selected the cheapest chocolate we could afford and forked another £2 for a packet per person.

Took some pictures just to pujuk ourselves and decided to have picnic at Duck Bay about 1km away from Balloch. It was a nice picnic area complete with children playground. The kids after having their dose of loads of sugar shot to the playground and ran around like demented little kids.

Liza packed fried speghetti, cikodok pisang and two thermos of hot tea. We brought with us chicken pops (buat sendiri beb!) and a pack of Milky Way chocolates - in case the kids run out of sugar supply.

All in all, it was a so so outing. Thanks to Duck Bay, otherwise our outing would be less than so so. The festival was a let down not because we can't eat the food (ada gak stall jual cheese), but the atmosphere was not as hype as what they advertised. I think we Malaysian host a better makan-makan festival. Ergh! Anyway, the view was splendid!

Pandanganku...

Buat apa tu?

Hari : Ahad
Masa : 10am
Lokasi : Tanah Melaya
Biasanya time-time macam ni, aku habiskan masa buat exercise gaya bebas atas katil, especially lepas solat Subuh yang kadang-kadang boleh terus berteleku atas sejadah untuk solah Zohor. (Tak paham? Tak apa .... Aiman tak kisah. P/S nama aku bukan Aiman)
Kalau ada citer pun hari Ahad, tunggulah petang sket, dapatlah tengok rerun CSI. Cerita crime scene investigation yang tahapa-hapa. Cerita Hollywood yang dok menipu aje kerjanya. Kalaulah setiap crime scene kat Malaysia sebersih crime scene kat Las Vegas, New York ataupun Miami, tentu dah ramai polis Malaysia jadi Grissom, Mac atau Horatio kat Tanah Melaya.
Hari : Ahad
Masa : 10am
Lokasi : Negara orang putih (walaupun tak semuanya putih.
Meriah? Indah? Itu bermakna lapisan harus dikurangkan. Jika cuaca agak muram dan 'merajuk' jangan tambah lapisan dulu. Hulurkan tangan anda di luar tingkap. Sejuk? Tambahlah. Suam suam kuku? Nak tambah pun tak pe, tak nak pun buleh juga.
Sejam kemudian .... sekali lagi menatap wajah di cermin. Puas hati? Bagus! Kurang warna?
Assalamualaikum, sapanya.
Waalaikumsalam, jawab kami.
Baru tiba? Soal ku berbasa basi.
Ya. Nak cari barang sikit. Jumpa lagi, jawab wanita itu dengan mesra.
Jumpa lagi, InsyaAllah, ujar kami sambil meneruskan lintasan hormat.
Argh!

Sit back and relax

Dah nak masuk 2 minggu aku kat sini, tapi tak pergi mana-mana pun. Bukan kata meronda ke Glasgow city, nak keluar rumah pun aku dok fikir 80 kali. Kalau aku bercuti, mesti dah jauh aku berjalan.
Kang mana nak masuk kerja, belajar, bejalan hehehehe .... macam tak percaya pulak.
La ni nak kerja pun, aku sangsi. NI number belum ada lagi tapi dah apply. Kelas belum daftar lagi tapi dah confirm. Jadi, semua serba tak kena. Nak berjalan takut duit habis plak ... ha itulah dia yang sebenarnya.
Maka solution untuk aku, duduk rumah dan menternak badan sampailah the date aku daftar uni and pergi interview for NI number. Lepas tu memang aku pulun kerja sungguh-sungguhlah agaknya. Agaknyalah! Jadi, aktiviti aku dok mengadap komputer jer.
Seminggu kat umah orang, aku pinjam komputer depa. Dua hari pindah kat umah sendiri, aku dah tak tentu arah. Mana nak dengar hot.fm (sebab kl.fm tak boleh access, ntah kenapa ntah), mana nak baca email, mana nak send email, mana nak baca berita dari Malaysia, tengok nama kak aku kuar paper semalam (pames dah kak aku nih!), mana nak chatting ngan kengkawan sebaya yang tak rabun IT. Ish ish ish. Takkanlah aku asyik nak pinjam computer orang kan? Jadi, apa solution aku? Inilah dia!

Walaupun aku kopak.
I LIKE!

Time to let go ...

Tears gathered in his eyes but he was too stubborn to let it flow. He willing them not to fall because he don't want her to see how vulnerable his feelings was. He choked down the tears a few times. He was good at that. As a man he had a lot of practice before. He was raised not to show his tears. He was told that little boy should not cry. But this time, he was not a little boy anymore. He was a grown man and it became harder for him to hold his sadness.

He is now an old man who had passed his 60th birthday years ago. He was not as strong as before, both physically and emotionally. His body protested against the cold of the aircondition in the big hall. His heart although beat steadily, almost collapse with the heavy burden he locked inside.Yes, it was harder and he struggled not to show it. Although his heart is about to break into million pieces, he kept a calm face. The ache in his heart is getting painful with every beat ...

She looked at him with love in her eyes. The eyes that were full of wisdom, pride, laughter and this time, sadness. It broke her heart but she cannot let him see how hurt it was to see the hapiness in his face was clearly replaced with sadness. She don't want to remember him this way. She wanted to remember him with huge smile on his face. With pride and joy.

He was her pillar, her guide when she fall into the murky water of confusions. He was her friend when she needed one. A person who listened to her problems and offered the solutions. The solutions too simple but were too complicated for her to see. He was her confidant. But, he was also the person who put her back on line when she strayed.

How could she leave him? How could he let her go?

He nodded at her. It's time, he said. The lady beside him nodded too. It's time, she said.

With heavy heart, she stood. She can't believe this is happening. She can't bear to look at him, so she faced the woman instead. She could see her eyes were red and tears had fallen down the woman's cheeks. The woman dabbed her tears with the end of her scarf but more streaming down, like a plug was suddenly taken off. The woman immediately pulled her into her arms and hugged her tight. She whispered into the woman's ears, please forgive me for all the wrongs I did, for the heartache I caused. The woman whispered back, I forgive you, my darling, please take care.

Her eyes felt grainy and she knew she had to keep her feelings in check immediately. She can't let her tears fall. She had to stay strong. She can't break down and cry. Immediately she broke away from her hug and with heavy heart, approached him.
She took his hand and kissed it. She embraced him tightly. This was the first after a long long time, they hugged. He was not a physical person and hardly ever showed his feelings freely. He was not used to showing off his affections, but she understood those silent affections. He doesn't need to be expressive. Although love words and hugs were scarce among them, she knew his love for her was abundant and unconditional.
She turned immediately and dabbed the tears that escaped and fall with her fingers. It's time to go.
She walked down the escalator and never looked back because she knew if she turns, she could never take the next step. She would stop and ran back to him. No... its time to go and she has to go on.

To love is to let go. Because of this, he let her go. How can he not? She is his daughter. She understood it was the hardest decision she had ever made in her life but her love for him would not dwindle although they would be thousands miles apart because he is her father ...
***

The sun was so brave this afternoon and shone brightly but clumps of pregnant clouds persistently tried to hide the beautifully bright globe. It was 12.20pm 27 August 2006. We were 20 minutes early when we landed at the Glasgow International Airport tarmac. It was a small airport, maybe the size of Miri or Penang or Kota Baharu airport.
Since I was seated at the back area of Boeing 747, we were ushered to the back door and had to use the stairs instead of the airbridge that was attached to the plane's main exit. The gush of wind that hit me when I walked across the tarmac was cool and refreshing compared to the hot weather when we stopped in Dubai International Airport during transit. It was around 6am when we reached Dubai but the temperature maybe had hit 30C.
The dramatic changes of scenery from lush greenery to arid and dry landscape and back to greener fields and sprawling open space in just a day was overwhelming for me. I'm in Glasgow now. New place, new people, new environment and ... alone.
I'm going to continue my life in this foreign land with Allah and His words in Quran as my guide. Thanks to Him, I found friends who would help me in my quest to fulfill my dream. Alhamdulillah.
I took a deep breath and continue walking across the tarmac. It was a new journey, one that promise a lot of challenges that require hardwork, heartache and eventually triumph. A journey with a single purpose and now my purpose is to pass the immigration without any glitch ...

Cikgu Gembira

Semalam hari guru.
I mean that’s why parents sent their children to schools to be educated because … hey, why not let the teachers handle them! By luck, these kids will be educated! Gitulah, kata aku.

Aku start sekolah lewat 70an (tak pe, memang aku dah tua pun). Kindergarten 2 tahun. Gila! Aku masuk kindergarten umur aku 4 tahun. Tu lah, aku ni memang scary sampai mak aku pun tak sanggup nak mengadap muka aku 24/7, so dia kata better send her to kindergarten so that I can have some peace and quite at home.

Tak delah dramatik macam tu sekali. Aku ni sebenarnya loner. Kat rumah, kawan-kawan aku cuma Ultraman, Tom & Jerry, Mickey Mouse dan yang sewaktu dengannya. Jadi, mak aku naklah aku kawan dengan species yang sama dengan aku – the homo sapiens, sebab itu dia hantar aku ke kindergarten so that I can mingle with my own human friends. Tapi sebenarnya mak aku tak tahu, kawan-kawan kat kindergarten aku tu pun Ultraman, Spiderman, Superman, Kapten Amerika, The Fab 4. Jenis penyelamat dunia yang berani mati. Tulah! Mak aku tak tahu semua tu. Superheroes tu pun jenis pandai sembunyikan identiti. Bila kat rumah masing-masing jadi the adorable 5 or 6 year olds. Masuk aje kat pagar kindergarten tu, masing-masing pakai their superheroes capes and up up and away to save the world from alien invasions.

A is not for Ayam. A is for Angel… like me!

Superheroes pulak kena selalu sembunyikan identiti… (where is this going?). Anyway aku bukan setakat loner, aku juga a shy pupil.

Bila aku naik tingkatan 1-5, aku still maintain kawan dengan superheroes cuma masa tu dah advance sikit. Kengkawan aku macam Mospeda, Kesatria Baja Hitam, Transformer, Chips, Thunderbird, McGyver dan yang sewaktu dengannya. People skill aku pun dah bertambah baik. Aku kawan dengan ramai jenis manusia macam rockers, tomboy, girly type, the nerds, the no cares type, troubled kids from troubled families dan yang sewaktu dengan aku – minah blur.

Apa-apa pun jenis kawan yang aku kawan waktu tu, kami ada satu cikgu yang kami memang look up betul at that time. The teacher taught Science when we were in Form Two and later Chemistry when in Form 4 and 5. Dia memang the best teacher. She can handle any type of student. Tomboy, lagi dia suka sebab senang nak suruh buat experiments, jenis tak penggeli. The nerds – of course lah, senang catch-up. The no-cares, tak kisah asalkan bagi perhatian dalam lab. Troubled kids, ha time ni lah depa boleh balas dendam buat experiment sampai meletup-letup guna penunu bunsen. Minah blur… hmm… yang ni ada problem sikit, tapi still… maintain!

Cikgu aku yang ni memang cool. Bukan setakat pandai komunikasi dengan pelajar, dia pun cantik orangnya. Dia tak kritik pelajar, dia tegur. Dia bagi kebebasan pada pelajar nak buat macamana asalkan by the end of the class, semua pelajar dia dapat tangkap pelajaran yang diberikan. Dia tak kisah pelajar dia questioned her methods ataupun answers yang diberikan, tapi dia encouraged pelajar dia to come up with their own reasons. Weh! At this 80s and 90s era, her method of teaching was considered quite advance.

Kalau cikgu-cikgu yang lain mesti kata murid kurang hajar, but not for her. She taught us to be creative. Not just in Science or Chemistry tapi in other aspects of life jugak.

Aku harap cikgu-cikgu sekarang ni tak delah spoon fed students diaorang lagi. Kalau tidak macamanalah murid-murid nak jadi creative. Budak-budak sekarang ni nak larikan diri dari sekolah pun tak kreatif, apatah lagi nak survive dalam dunia ni. Tengok graduan sekarang pun, tak reti nak bersaing langsung. Sebab? Mereka dah dilatih untuk cuma menjawab soalan saja. Agaknya kalau kita pusing sikit soalan-soalan tu, mesti tak reti nak jawab dah. Bila dah jadi macam ni, tak bermaknalah gulungan ijazah diaorang ni.

Kalau di kindergarten, aku pernah dirotan oleh satu cikgu perempuan ni sebab misspelled, sampai sekarang aku ingat ‘kindergarten’ is not’kindergarden’.

Kamu diam saja, tenang. Bagi dia lepaskan geram dia. Kamu diam. Kamu masak sedap-sedap, kamu bagi dia makan. Bila dia sudah tersandar kekenyangan kamu counter attack – Abang tadi silap. Sebenarnya begini bla bla bla’

Abang? Hahahaha

Happy Teachers Day.

Nyamok oh Nyamuuk

Masuk kerja lepas maghrib dan balik dalam 3 or 4am. Bukan apa, bila dah ada tag touch and go ni, aku boleh access pejabat anytime aku suka. Bila malam, suasana sunyi jadi aku boleh concentrate especially bila aku buat satu program ni. Paling payah dan paling lama aku nak habiskan.

Bila dah kerja malam ni aku boleh access internet and any websites yang aku rasa nak jenguk.

Termasuk aku sekali. Sometimes aku sengaja dok diam-diam and lepastu terus lancarkan serangan balas. Dapatlah 3 or 4 ekor, tapi lepas tu datang pulak satu batalion ngiiing ngiiing kat telinga… adus! Risau gak aku dibuatnya.

Depa malas nak terbang kot sebab tu depa tumpang kereta aku. Dah ada convenient transportation, guna ajelah… Gitulah gamaknya.

Aku kena bawa mosquito repellent.

superwoman at work

Memang lama aku tak update apa-apa, bukan tak nak tapi sebab tak ada internet connection. Aku kan cheapo. Kalau dulu connection kat opis aku pulun habis-habisan sebab free, sekarang ni bila dah tak kerja, mana nak cari free connection? Jadi, stagnant or keras keng lah blog ni.

Anyway, aku dah dapat kerja as subtitlist kat company Media Prima hehehehe. Yes! Boys and girls!

Yep, my body is getting rounder and rounder like the American potatos. Cuma sekarang bila kerja ni, aku tak rasa jadi couch potato, jadi patatas fritas adalah. Terbakar otak aku! Garing!

Dulu kita selalu sangat komplen pasal bahasa yang digunakan pada subtitles especially bila mak-mak kita or makcik-makcik kita menonton tv during that housewives break tengahari buta. Ye la walaupun tak faham bahasa dari negara-negara latin, depa kenal characters cerita tu macam ‘Yo Soy Betty la Fea’ ataupun “Mi Tres Hamanas’ belum lagi ‘Kay Tagal’ dengan Ara dan Christiannya. Tang petang pulak mulalah mencangak depan tv tengok cerita Korea yang dialih bahasa Mandarin. Still tak faham gak bahasa Mandarin tu walaupun 60 mins x 5 seminggu terpacak kat depan kaca tv tu. Kalau miss satu episode, memuncunglah sampai ke esok petang pulak.

Okay-okay… sebabkan rakyat Malaysia ni memang suka menonton tv luar, kita sangat bergantung pada subtitles. Kalau subtitles salah, kita komplen habis-habisan. Apa hal sudah adik jadi long pulak. Datuk long tu wujudke? Tapi, bila aku sendiri dah masuk dalam bidang ni, barulah aku tahu, susah tak susahnya bila kita buat translation ni. In the end, silap-silap kita yang akan jadi adik ngah tok long pulak, tak ke pening?

Malangnya pulak, unlike office lama aku yang any tom dick and harry boleh access the internet, as long as they have computers and passwords of course, sebab connections berselirat merata-rata tempat, belum lagi pasal wifinya…. Di sini, ahem! The biggest tv station in Malaysia, mind you, have only one terminal equipped with internet connection and printer in their special room for translators.

Sebabkan ini gak aku kena adaptkan diri aku menggunakan kamus secara manually instead of click windows and type in the webpage for dictionary.com.

Sekarang ni aku dah tak dapat 9 programme seminggu lagi. Aku cuma ada 4 je. Second bos aku kata ini sebab aku komplen kat bos no 1 aku yang aku kena torture. Ya ke? Aku tak tahu pun yang aku mengadu. Aku cuma cakap aku tak nak buat 1 program katun tu sebab it takes a lot of my time, sedangkan aku kena concentrate untuk 1 lagi program yang tinggi ratingnya. Bos no 2 aku tu jugak yang advised aku suruh cakap dengan bos no 1. Bila dah cakap tu, bos no 1 terus tarik 5 program lagi dan tinggalkan 4. Salah aku ke? Aku kan jujur, hahaha.

Lepas seminggu kerja, aku dah taklah terkial-kial sangat nak buat subtitle ni. Dah laju sikit. Kat sini gak lah aku kenal the best subtitlists in Malaysia. Aku harap aku taklah jadi the worst. Okeh! Aku nak buat kartun plak lepas ni… kartun ni siksa sikit, banyak cakap!

Bila dah kurang buat program, kuranglah pendapatan aku lepas ni. Ish! Mahal juga harga sebuah 'pengorbanan' ni ye?

Kerja?

Aku dapat interview kat satu stesen tv.

By 8.30am aku dah keluar rumah sebab interview aku kat sana dalam pukul 10am.

And at the same time, aku boleh take my own sweet time untuk cari parking free tepi jalan.

Depan and belakang. Macam dalam hospital pulak aku rasa. Turun kat tingkat dua, aku capai aje lah pintu yang aku jumpa. Nasib baik betul. Masuk cari orang yang akan interview aku. Sejuknya kat dalam ni macam kat tempat opis lama aku gak. Sejuk sampai ke tulang. Macam bilik mayat. Hmm… betul ke ini bangunan tv station? Atau…

Aku di bawa ke satu bilik kaca. Kat situ, si interviewer terus menginterview si interviewee (yiehah! Aku le tu). Tak ada apa-apa pun, cuma borak-borak. Tanya aku kenapa aku berenti kerja dulu. Aku cakaplah aku dah penat.

Punyalah lama aku tak tulis tangan, sekarang aku kena tulis pulak dah.

Tulisan aku bukanlah elok sangat. By second page, dah jadi cakar ayam. Tangan kidal aku pun dah lenguh tulis berhelai-helai atas kertas kajang. Kajang pak malau kajang berlipat… kajang hamba dah berkeronyok sana sini. Dekat tiga jam aku nak selesaikan semua test aku tu. Dari pukul 10.30am sampai dekat pukul 1pm. Dari tak lapar, sampai laparlah dibuatnya.

Aku harap-harap sangat dapat kerja ni. Kalau dapat, hush! Nama aku akan terpampang di dada-dada televisyen. Aku akan jadi terkenal gaklah. Kembang kempis hidung aku bila berangan aku nampak nama aku. Aku akan jadi translator. Aku akan jadi penulis sari kata hahahaha! Syoknya!

Where to Mr. President?

Since I left school days, I’ve been a sports brand promoter, a clerk at a law journal company, another clerical position at an engineering firm before I landed a job which encompassed every jobs I did and more except the brand promoter, of course.

Never in my life that I thought I would land another job which required me to be road savvy, on the move and know where the best Middle Eastern food haven. I am going to be a driver and a guide. One of the small ambassadors of Malaysia zooming in many streets of Kuala Lumpur but, without the red and white car adorned with red hibiscus abstractly painted on the sides. I'm just driving my own grey Proton Wira Aeroback. I am a driver and driving not just for any ordinary people. I am driving for a special person, A man with great influence. I am driving for a president!

Yep! I am now officially hired as a driver cum guide for a president from a country far far away - A country on the other side of the globe, from one of the continents in the world. From US of A. Yes! He is a president, though he’s not the president of a country, a president nonetheless. He is a president of a multi-national furniture trade company, which is based in Houston. And he is an Iranian.

The job was from a friend in Houston - a very good friend. From an ex-housemate, before she got married and moved to US with his husband. Who, already got her green card and now heavily pregnant with first baby who is going to be an American as well since he (yes! It’s a boy!) will be born there. Who will get a cute foot prints, on his birth certificate. All you Americans! Lalalala

Anyway, this friend called and asked if I could help her president who need to come to KL for the MIFF exhibition. This was going to be his maiden visit to KL and need somebody to show him around. The only person she could think of was, me. Of course I would get my share of sparkling blue or purple Agongs for my trouble. Now, How could I reject this favour?

Definitely, I have to be prepared and first impression is very important, right? My first duty was to fetch him from the airport. So, with a placard with his name on it, I marched to the departure hall and wait among the hotel, car rentals, “ulat teksi” and even MIFF representatives. I waved my hand-written placard enthusiastly every time hordes of tourists passed the glass door. I wouldn’t want to be outdone by those aneroxic girls in short-skirts of course!

I switched hands when tired. Its been an hour and still I didn’t see Mr. President (oh I don’t really know how he looked like. I was told he was in his fifties). At this time, I was wondering whether Mr. President got lost while finding his way out.

Suddenly, an Arab man tapped me on the shoulder. He smiled widely. Telling me he was the person I was looking for. He was the Mr. President. I looked skeptically at the man. He was not even fifty. I mentioned his name again. “Yes!” he said. “I am he!”

He ushered me (yep! It’s the other way around for us) to his friend who was waiting with a trolley laden with big bags. This person looked like he was in his fifties. Now, my friend didn’t mentioned two guys. She said it was only one man. The Mr. President. I started to wonder why my friend failed to mention a “companion” to Mr. President.

I told the Arabs to wait at the gate and I will bring my car there. While driving to the arrival area outside the main building, I received a call from Mr. President asking me where I am. I told him I’m already on my way to the arrival area. I parked my car illegally and waved at the two Arabs whom I thought would be my guests for the next five days.

While the two Arabs were busy putting their big bags into my car, I received another call from my handphone and this time it was from a Malay chap telling me that my guest is still waiting at the arrival hall. I was confused. I told him my guests are with me. Then I spoke to the original Mr. President. La! There was a mixed-up! These two Arabs thought I was the person who supposed to pick them up at the airport.

Bodoh betul! I asked their names again. They nodded. I asked their surnames, they looked confused. I asked them whether they are from America. They echoed my question. La! Can’t they read the sign? It was clearly written there, “Mr. President”. At this time I really wanted to knock their heads… and mine too! So much for first impression!

They scrambled out of the car, took their bags and looked lost. Who cares! My Mr. President is already here. I waved at him. Apologised to him profusely. He said ok. Put his bag into the boot and shot off to city centre. Whatever happened to the Arab guys, I wished them luck!

After I sent my Mr. President to the hotel, checked in. Bought him his prepaid card, topped up. Bought another handphone and showed him the way to PWTC, I went back home.

On the way home I couldn’t stop thinking the fate of the two Arabs… and laughing. Bodoh betul! Mak ai! Penatnya!

Apapun, I still bersyukur coz I still have my sanity and can laugh at my own mistakes. Honest mistake la, sapa suruh mamat arab masuk keta aku!

wacha!

Kadang-kadang aku fikir, lebih baik lepaskan sahaja cita-citaku. Tinggalkan sahaja impianku, buangkan sahaja angan-anganku. Biarlah aku putus asa, biarlah mereka kata aku mudah menyerah kalah.

Aku dah penat bekerja.

ladida oh life!

I am still unemployed. Study - postponed. Money - I think zero. Liability - just one more credit card. Book - completed and still searching for publisher.

The only place to surf internet, is at mak's house but had to do so sparringly especially when dad came home and showed me the bill. RM80 waahh!!! Me just use the dial-up and always disconnected, still RM80? hehehe. As usual mom started nagging me. Dad just raised his eyebrows and me? Never mind. Got long tunnel between my ears meh! Whatever came into the right ear can just slide through the opposite way!

Life as an unemployed can be very hectic. Tak percaya? Well, last Friday, sis called and said she wanted to hitch a ride with me balik kampung, so off we went from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca, with another small baggage in tow. My cutest baby niece.

My mom of course was delighted to see the baby. She spent two days playing with her, cooeing her and did whatever grandmother do lah! Then its time to go back to KL. As a designated unpaid permanent family driver, I duly noted my duty to drive sis. Unexpectedly, mom wanted to come too.

The drive to KL began. As usual, since we are not a staunch Gov supporters, we took trunk road. 2 1/2 hour to reach KL. Under the scorching hot sun. In Kancil.

Mom's not the type who could be comfortable at "foreign land" too long. Even at sis's home. So after spending about one and a half hour there, she insisted we drive back to Malacca. Aisey! There should be no argument about it! So, reluctantly, we said goodbye and ready to go back.

After about five kilometre, the clouds started to gather, the wind howling and rain finally came down. In buckets. I took a different route, to Keramat wet market. Hahaha told mak. Laparlah! Can we stop for dinner?

"Got money?" mak asked.

"Nope!" I grinned.

"Then how to pay?"

"It's your turn to pay lah! How to drive in this rain? I can't even see two metres ahead. My stomach emptylah mak."

We went into a regular small but busy warung. Each of us got one plate of steaming hot rice. A portion of chicken for me and a fish for mak. Some vege and salted egg to share between us. A glass of lemon for me and a carbonated orange for mak. Total RM9.40. Then mak decided to pack dad some roti canai. So another RM3.00 added.

Mak grumbled when she took out RM20 from her wallet, but later added another 40 sen for some gula-gula hahaha.

By the time, we finished our meal and into our car, the rain has stopped. By the time we left Kajang, mak already lentok her head. She was fast asleep. She did not even stirred during the drive or the occassional bounced when I hit some potholes. I slipped in my tape into the deck. Tam of Spider started "coaxing" me to rub the magic lantern. Gosok jangan tak gosok...

I had to "endure" listening to the tape for three times as my nephew had "kapur" my Radja tape and left me with the empty cover. Ceh!

p/s : mom's nagging in the background but I couldn't hear the details...

Al-Fatihah

I am still unemployed. Study - postponed. Money - almost zero. Liability - increasing. Book - 70% and still in inertia mode.

I lost someone dear on Christmas day. He was my uncle. He died early morning but we only knew he had passed away later in the afternoon.

Chik was 65 when he passed away. A year younger then my father. He was single. Never married and I was very close with him. He was not exactly my uncle, just my step-uncle, but for us, he was family. what saddens me was nobody had the decency to call us and told us about the sad news. We do not know whether he died alone or if there was someone beside him to whisper and reminded him the name of his Creator. To prepare him. All we can do now is to pray that Allah have mercy on his soul.

I asked dad why Chik never married, dad said that he was engaged before but there was another guy who was also interested with his intended. He just gave up and broke the engagement. Since then, he never show any interest in any girl.

Chik practically raised me. Since he was unmarried and has no family of his own, he regarded me as his daughter he never had. I used to sit on his lap, marvel at his strenght. He would buy me ice-creams whenever I was down with flu or fever. He would say,"Ini ubat demam selsema. Makan, nanti cepat baik." And I would gladly devoured my Wall's ice-cream or guzzled down some bottled soda carbonated drink.

When I started schooling, he was the one who gave my first present. A wristwatch. Not the cheap plastic ones but a real watch. Citizen, Christian Dior and another Citizen. Although he stayed in Klang and us in Ampang, he would come for visit at least once a week or twice a month. And his visits never disappointed me. He would always bring some ole-ole, present - just for me.

Unfortunately, as years go by, we fall apart. I grew up and no longer his little girl. Our relationship was not as close as before. I learnt to have secrets from him. I have other interests. But Chik always love me in his own way. I may not be his little girl whom he could cuddle, in fact we have less physical contact except when I kissed his hands whenever we met. However, in my heart I knew he still love me.

Chik once told dad he wanted to name me as his beneficiery so that if anything happens to him, all his savings will go to me, but dad politely refused the offer. He did not want Chik's real family to squabble over this. The last we knew, Chik had almost RM80,000 in his ASB account.

It was just money. What I lost is greater then that. I lost the one person who loved me dearly. I missed Chik. What I can give now is only Al-Fatihah and doa that Allah have mercy on his soul.

A day after Christmas, my handphone buzzed. It was a text message from Mona. Ipah's dad had passed away in Muar. It was already 6.30pm when text came. I immediately called June (who was based in Muar). Lucky she answered the call. Made a plan with her to go and visit Ipah the next day.

I drove from Malacca to Muar and met June at Abu Bakar Mosque after dropping dad at the Land Office a few meters away from the mosque. We spent three hours at Ipah’s house.

I wish I could help ease Ipah’s sadness. She was very close with her dad. Like I am close with dad. Her eyes were puffy red. She had been crying all night. When we hugged and say goodbye, Ipah whispered in my eyes. “at least everytime I have to go away, I don’t have to worry about him anymore.” I knew then she would be alright.
